About the Competition:

The International Instrumental Competition Markneukirchen is held in a world famous centre of the making of musical instruments. Musical instruments have been built in high quality in the "Musikwinkel" for 350 years. The competition has its roots in this long and living condition.

The competition started with the modest beginning of a violin contest from 1950 to 1965. The competition has developed to a performance of international meaning and in 1993 it was admitted to the "WORLD FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITIONS".

The International Instrumental Competition is held in a change of string instruments and wind instruments every year and it is to support new recruits of musicians. The competition has a high artistic level and it is estimated as an important event among experts. Taking first places means for the participant to get an international reputation and it can be seen as an international quality mark.

The good reputation and its high attraction is shown by the raising number of participants.

The great response bases of the unique flair and the interaction of trade and artistic work. New contacts have been made between those who have mastered their instruments and the makers of musical instruments in Markneukirchen who make their instruments with artistic abilities.

The competition has gained in importance by the participation of leading and world famous personalities as professor Julius Berger (Augsburg) and the president of the competition professor Peter Damm (Dresden) and other famous artists and musicians.

In 2005 the world-famous conductor and longstanding conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra Prof. Kurt Masur assumed the patronage of the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition. With the patronage on this internationaly respected competition a friendly relationship between Kurt Masur and the music town Markneukirchen revives: In 1985 the Maestro conducted the Markneukirchen Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of the 20th jubilee of the International Instrumental Competition Markneukirchen.
